Holiday rains could cut tap water pressure

Panama's weather service has a watch for significant rain in force until midnight on Tuesday 3 November 2026, and the national water utility is warning that the downpours could reduce tap-water production in some areas. The Instituto de Meteorología e Hidrología de Panamá (Imhpa) says a low-pressure system over the Caribbean is making the atmosphere more unstable, La Prensa and Telemetro reported.

The timing matters. The watch overlaps the start of the Fiestas Patrias holidays, when many residents drive to the interior, including provinces still recovering from the 9 October earthquake (La Prensa).

Where the heaviest rain is expected

  • Imhpa forecasts numerous rains from 1 to 3 November in central and southern Veraguas, Herrera, Los Santos, Coclé, and central and eastern Panamá province (La Prensa; Telemetro; EcoTV).
  • Significant rain is not ruled out elsewhere, especially on the Pacific side (La Prensa).
  • Possible effects: flash rises in rivers and streams, flooding, landslides and local wind gusts (La Prensa; Telemetro).
  • Sinaproc, the civil protection agency, extended its own prevention notice for rain and storms to 3 November (Telemetro; EcoTV).

What Idaan is warning about

  • In a preventive notice on Saturday 31 October, Idaan said heavy rain can raise turbidity (sediment) in the rivers that feed its treatment plants (TVN; Telemetro).
  • If turbidity gets too high, some plants may cut output or pause operations to protect equipment and water quality. Homes served by those plants could see low pressure or temporary interruptions (TVN; Telemetro).
  • The notice does not name any plant or community, and it does not mean plants have shut down (TVN; Telemetro).
  • Idaan asks households to keep a basic reserve of drinking water in clean, covered containers and to avoid waste. Updates: idaan.gob.pa, @IDAANinforma on X and @idaanpanama on Instagram (Telemetro).

Sinaproc safety advice

  • Do not cross rivers, streams or flooded streets, and stay away from riverbanks and slopes prone to landslides (Telemetro; EcoTV).
  • Clear drains and gutters, secure roofs and loose objects, and unplug electrical equipment if water enters the home, only if it is safe to do so (EcoTV).
  • Emergencies: 911, or Sinaproc's line 520-4426 (Telemetro; EcoTV).

On the road

  • The Ministry of Public Works (MOP) suspended roadworks that take up traffic lanes from Saturday 31 October to Thursday 5 November on main routes, including the Panamericana from La Espiga de La Chorrera to Paso Canoas (Telemetro 27 Oct). Fewer work zones does not mean dry roads, so plan for rain.

What it means for expats

  • If you live in a building or house fed by Idaan, fill a few covered containers now. Condo residents can ask the administrator whether the building tank and pump are ready for a pressure drop.
  • Driving to Azuero, Coclé or Veraguas for the holidays: check Sinaproc and Imhpa before you leave, avoid fording any stream, and leave extra daylight margin on rural roads.
  • In quake-damaged areas, heavy rain adds landslide and roof-leak risk. Follow local Sinaproc guidance before entering damaged structures.
  • Save 911 and 520-4426 in your phone, and follow official channels rather than forwarded chat messages.
