Android quake alerts are live in Panama

Android phones in Panama can now receive Google Earthquake Alerts, Telemetro and EcoTV reported after the feature was enabled in the country on Thursday 29 October 2026. Google's Android blog listed Panama among regions added in a mid-October expansion from 98 to more than 200 countries and regions, with rollout expected over about a week.

The system is built for earthquakes estimated at magnitude 4.5 or higher. It does not predict quakes. Phone sensors detect shaking that has already started, and alerts may arrive before, during or after you feel motion, depending on distance, intensity and connectivity (Telemetro; EcoTV; Google).

Three alert types

  • Be Aware (alerta de atención): a simple notice for estimated light shaking nearby, with a tap-through for more detail (Telemetro; Google).
  • Be Ready (alerta de preparación): a stronger-shaking notice meant to push you to prepare and protect yourself (Telemetro; Google).
  • Take Action (alerta de acción): a full-screen alert for moderate to heavy shaking, with immediate safety guidance (Telemetro; Google).

How to check it on Android

  • Open Settings, then Safety and emergency (Seguridad y emergencias).
  • Find Earthquake alerts / Alertas de terremotos (or Alertas de sismos).
  • Confirm the toggle is on. On some models the menu sits under Location or Google services (Telemetro; EcoTV).
  • Keep location services and Wi-Fi or mobile data available. Without connectivity, delivery can fail (Telemetro; EcoTV).
  • If the menu is missing, search settings for "Earthquake alerts." Names vary by manufacturer and Android version. If you see "not available," try again later as rollout finishes (EcoTV).

What it is not

  • iPhone users cannot turn this Google tool on in iOS settings. Apple has its own emergency-notification channels, and availability depends on what is enabled in each country (EcoTV).
  • An alert is not a guarantee of seconds of warning. Some Android users said they got notices around the Saturday 31 October Temblor near Tonosí (Instituto de Geociencias preliminary magnitude 6.1, about 10:50 a.m., 18 km east of Tonosí, 10 km depth, per Telemetro citing IGC). Others said they got nothing. Delivery can vary by location, estimated intensity, connectivity and phone settings (Telemetro 31 Oct).

What it means for expats

  • If you live or travel with an Android phone after the 9 October quake, this is a free extra layer. Turn it on once, then keep data or Wi-Fi ready.
  • Households that mix Android and iPhone should not assume everyone gets the same ping. Agree a family Drop, Cover, Hold On plan that does not depend on a phone buzz.
  • Pair the feature with Sinaproc and local authority guidance. The alert is a tool, not a substitute for knowing your exits, safe spots and go-bag.
  • Do not treat social-media screenshots of alerts as magnitude truth. Prefer Instituto de Geociencias and official updates when numbers move.
