Private schools reopen Tuesday, public ones Wednesday
Panama's Education Ministry (MEDUCA) has set a staggered return after the 9 October earthquake. Private schools may resume in-person classes on Tuesday 13 October if their directors confirm the buildings are safe. Public (official) schools start a gradual reopening from Wednesday 14 October, once inspections clear each plant (La Prensa, Telemetro, EcoTV). That answers the open question left in earlier coverage, when a national Tuesday return for the official system was still unconfirmed.
What MEDUCA is saying
- About 894 private schools (~140,000 students, ~11,000 teachers) may reopen Tuesday if directors guarantee safety for students, staff and families (Telemetro; EcoTV citing minister Ventura Vega).
- Official schools stay suspended until Wednesday. Vega said 209 engineers, architects and electromechanical specialists were inspecting plants so the ministry can announce which official schools reopen from Wednesday and what instruction applies where a building stays closed (EcoTV 12 Oct; La Prensa 13 Oct).
- MEDUCA counts 619 schools with some damage across 15 education regions, and 35 with total collapse or severe damage: Herrera 20, Veraguas 7, Los Santos 5, Coclé 2, Chiriquí 1 (Telemetro 13 Oct; La Prensa 13 Oct). Hardest-hit affected counts include Veraguas 192, Herrera 91 and Chiriquí 87 (Telemetro).
- La Prensa on Tuesday put enrolment in the collapsed schools at 422 students. An earlier Monday piece had cited about 3,031 students tied to fully damaged plants. Treat 422 as the newer published figure and expect further revision as inspections finish.
- About 34 class days remain. The 2026 school year ends 11 December; graduations run 11 to 18 December. The official system serves more than 802,000 students (EcoTV / Telemetro).
- Sinaproc's Monday 12 October 10 p.m. cut counted 2,164 affected families (7,480 people) across nine provinces, separate from the school tally (La Prensa 13 Oct).
What it means for expats
- If your children attend a private school in Panama City, interior or Chiriquí, ask the school today for its written safety check and whether Tuesday classes are on. MEDUCA put that call on directors, not on a blanket national green light.
- Public-school families should wait for MEDUCA's plant-by-plant announcement for the gradual Wednesday reopen. Outlets said the ministry would name which official plants clear inspections; that named list was not yet published when this pack was locked. Do not assume every official school reopens the same day.
- Interior provinces (especially Herrera, Veraguas, Los Santos) face the most destroyed plants. Alternative instruction for those 35 sites is still being defined.
- Calendar pressure is real with roughly five weeks left. Expect catch-up plans and possible flexible modalities at private schools that reopen with limits.
- This is a return calendar, not a claim that every campus is undamaged. Keep aftershock and building-safety habits in place.
