Black Weekend is on: check the real discount before you pay

If you are shopping this weekend in Panama's malls (or hosting visitors who came to buy), the Panamá Black Weekend window is 2-4 October 2026, and ACODECO is treating it as a consumer-rights operation, not only a sales festival.

TVN and Telemetro report promotions across 16 shopping centers and, in ACODECO's framing, more than 3,000 establishments. Announced discounts run as high as 50-70% on selected goods, depending on the outlet. The Asociación Panameña de Centros Comerciales is the commercial umbrella for the malls on the list.

What ACODECO is checking

ACODECO administrator Ramón Abadi (Telemetro, 2 Oct) urged shoppers not to buy on flashy presentation alone: photograph prices, compare stores, ask the final price before paying, read small print, and always take the fiscal invoice. Law 45 of 2007 still governs special sales: merchants must show the previous and new price and say whether the deal covers the whole store or only selected items.

TVN's advance note (30 Sep) recalled Black Weekend 2025 inspections: 318 premises checked, 42 advertising anomalies, 112 expired products, 185 sites missing visible prices. On 2 October, TVN described an Albrook Mall operation that already found missing prices on view and cases tied to extra credit-card charges. Report problems via 311, @AcodecoPma, or ACODECO's site.

Rules shoppers often get wrong

ACODECO stresses there is no general right to return an item only because you changed your mind. Check guarantee policies before you pay. Abadi also said ACODECO is verifying fuel stations for hoarding or refusal to sell available product during the same weekend (useful context alongside the new SNE maxima).

Mall operators (Albrook, via TVN) expect stronger Saturday-Sunday traffic, including shoppers from Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, Argentina, and Brazil. Hours cited for the event: about 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., with some stores extending. Sector voices floated a sales expectation near last year's about US$80 million; treat that as aspiration, not a verified 2026 result.

Bottom line for expats

Use the weekend for deals you already planned to buy, not impulse stockpiles. Screenshot the advertised price, match it at the register, keep the factura, and walk away if the fine print fails. Foreign visitors shopping tourism is part of the pitch; residents should still treat every "70% off" claim as something to verify under Law 45.
