CSS is still onboarding doctors for Mi Receta Digital (Mi Farma stock check is live)
If you are insured with the CSS and see a private doctor, you may have heard that private prescriptions can now be filled at CSS pharmacies through Mi Receta Digital. Not yet. On 5 October 2026 the Social Security Fund (CSS) clarified that Mi Receta Digital has not been launched for insured patients, and that the current registration of doctors is a stage before launch (TVN, 5 October).
In short: doctors can register, but patients cannot use the prescription path yet. A separate CSS tool, Mi Farma Digital, already works for patients and lets you check which CSS pharmacies have a medicine in stock.
Where Mi Receta Digital stands
Vicente Chiu, the CSS deputy director of Technology and Security, told TVN that registering a private doctor takes about two months, and that 544 doctors who do not work in the public sector have joined the platform so far. They add to the 4,585 CSS doctors and dentists already enrolled. The CSS also wants to bring in Ministry of Health (Minsa) doctors to widen coverage (TVN). In May 2026, La Estrella counted roughly 250 private doctors enrolled.
The CSS first announced Mi Receta Digital in May 2026 as part of Mi Caja Digital, and said then that it would be available within 15 to 20 days (Telemetro, 6 May). It has not opened to patients since, and TVN's 5 October report gives no launch date.
How it is meant to work once it launches
- A private doctor registers at mirecetadigital.css.gob.pa, fills in the form and submits documents, including a copy of their medical idoneidad. The CSS validates the credentials and issues a username and password (TVN).
- Once enabled, the doctor can check whether the patient is entitled to CSS coverage and look up the medicine in CSS inventory, including which facilities have it and how much (TVN).
- Doctor and patient choose the most convenient CSS pharmacy for pickup (TVN).
- The patient goes to that pharmacy with a cédula or a passport to collect the medicine, which should already be prepared (TVN).
Telemetro's September explainers also described facial recognition to confirm that the patient is insured. Treat all of these steps as the planned design until the CSS opens the service to patients.
What works today: Mi Farma Digital
Chiu drew a clear line between the two tools. Mi Farma Digital is already available to insured patients: type in the name of a medicine and it shows which CSS facilities have stock, and it also tells you when a medicine is not available (TVN). The site is mifarmadigital.css.gob.pa. It works from a phone or a computer and does not require an account or password (Eco TV, Telemetro). The CSS says it is connected to its 75 pharmacies (Eco TV).
The CSS acknowledges that these tools can be hard for some older adults. Some facilities offer help: at the Policlínica Presidente Remón, pharmacy staff give guidance, and courses for older adults run at a care program on Calle 25 with support from social workers (TVN). Chiu added that the CSS has to keep its pharmacies stocked so that people can trust what the platform shows (TVN).
Bottom line for expats
- Until the CSS announces the launch, do not assume a private prescription will reach a CSS pharmacy through Mi Receta Digital. Ask your CSS clinic or pharmacy how private prescriptions are handled at your center today.
- Check Mi Farma Digital before you travel to a pharmacy. It shows stock; it does not create stock.
- If your private doctor sees CSS patients, ask whether they have registered on Mi Receta Digital. Registration takes about two months, so a doctor who starts now will be ready sooner once patients can use it.
- When the service opens, the CSS says patients can pick up with a cédula or a passport (TVN), which matters for foreign residents. Confirm with your center at launch.
- The Mi Receta Digital pickup path is for people insured with the CSS.
Correction, 6 October 2026: An earlier version of this article said Mi Receta Digital was in use for patients and working with private doctors, and attributed the patient stock check to it. The CSS said on 5 October that the platform has not been launched for insured patients and that doctor registration is a pre-launch stage (TVN). The headline and body have been updated, the stock check is now attributed to Mi Farma Digital, and the CSS official's name is corrected to Vicente Chiu.
