Cabinet declares national emergency over El Niño — up to B/.80M for response

On 25 August 2026, Panama’s Cabinet declared a national emergency over El Niño impacts. IMHPA had warned on 12 May of rainfall deficits of about 60% across roughly 11 watersheds, with stronger deficits expected from October 2026 through March 2027. The resolution authorizes special procurement of up to B/.80 million through 30 June 2027.

The emergency authority supports response purchases and works. It does not by itself order household water rationing.

What it means for daily life: This signals a stronger public response to water and climate risk through mid-2027. Watch separately for any IDAAN, ACP, or municipal water notices — those are what would actually change your tap, bills, or Canal-related supply.

Emergency unlocks procurement — it does not by itself equal household water cuts.
