Storms cut water in Panamá Oeste, and Tuesday brings a planned stop

If you live in La Chorrera or Arraiján, fill your containers now. Heavy rain on Saturday 3 October 2026 swelled rivers near the Mendoza water treatment plant, which the Panama Canal operates, and cut the flow of raw water into the plant. The Canal said on Sunday 4 October that the drop in intake was affecting service and that its technical team was working to restore normal flow as soon as possible (TVN, Telemetro, Crítica).

Mendoza is not a small plant. According to Canal figures cited by Crítica, it can supply about 41 million gallons a day and serves an estimated 242,000 people in the two districts.

A second, planned shutdown on Tuesday

Separately, the Canal and IDAAN announced that Mendoza will stop producing drinking water on Tuesday 6 October, from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., because the power distributor has scheduled electrical work. Once power returns, the plant restarts and service comes back gradually, so taps on high floors and at the end of the network may take longer than 11:00 a.m. to recover (Telemetro, citing the Canal and IDAAN).

The weather is not done yet

IMHPA extended its watch for significant rain and thunderstorms for the whole country and its coastal waters until 11:59 p.m. on Monday 5 October, linked to tropical wave No. 50 and soils already saturated by recent rain. Sinaproc carried the same warning. The heaviest totals are expected over the Cordillera Central, the western Pacific, and Veraguas, with two-day accumulations on IMHPA's map ranging from 50 to 280 mm depending on the area (TVN, Telemetro).

Sinaproc's preliminary damage count on Sunday listed 35 homes and 142 people affected in Juan Demóstenes Arosemena (Arraiján), mainly Nuevo Arraiján, Valle Hermoso, and Valle del Sol, with Cerro Tigre still under evaluation. Crews also handled fallen trees, rockfalls, and water entering homes, including one house in Almirante (Bocas del Toro) and one in Tocumen (TVN).

A pattern worth noting

This is not the first Mendoza disruption of 2026. In April the plant ran at about 75% after a problem at its raw-water intake (La Estrella), and in August an electrical incident halted production (Destino Panamá).

Bottom line for expats

If you rent or are house-hunting in La Chorrera or Arraiján, treat water storage as standard equipment, not an extra. Ask landlords whether the building has a tank and pump, and keep at least a day of drinking and flushing water at home. For Tuesday, store water Monday night. During the storm watch, avoid crossing rivers, streams, or flooded streets, and stay away from slopes prone to slides. Emergencies: 911 or the COE line 520-4426.
